Penalties may be assessed for conduct that occurs during or immediately surrounding a game. Referees and DIBHA league organizers have authority to determine the appropriate penalty based on the severity and circumstances of the incident.

  • Minor Infraction: 2-minute penalty.
  • Foul Language / Swearing: 2-minute penalty after the first offense.
  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Warning for the first offense; a 2-minute penalty for a second offense.

  • Progressive Discipline: DIBHA will consider the full circumstances of an incident when determining further discipline. Warnings are not a free pass for continued misconduct. Repeated violations, retaliation, arguing after a penalty or warning, or escalation of an incident will result in progressively stronger consequences.
  • These consequences may include: 2-minute penalty → additional penalty → misconduct → game ejection → suspension → further disciplinary action by DIBHA.
  • DIBHA organizers reserve the right to impose additional discipline where the circumstances warrant it.

Serious Misconduct

The following may result in immediate ejection and/or suspension:

  • Threatening or abusive behaviour toward players, coaches, referees, volunteers, or spectators.
  • Repeated or deliberate use of foul, obscene, or abusive language.
  • Physical retaliation or deliberate escalation of an incident.
  • Entering the rink or interfering in an incident when not authorized.
  • Discriminatory, hateful, or otherwise seriously inappropriate comments or conduct.
  • Fighting: Immediate ejection and possible suspension by DIBHA.
  • Players must not retaliate, leave the bench, or enter an altercation involving other players.

Retaliation & Escalation

  • Retaliation, responding to an incident after the whistle, or intentionally escalating a confrontation will result in increased punishment.
  • Players are expected to disengage from conflicts and allow referees and DIBHA league organizers to manage the situation.
  • Any player who continues to engage in an altercation after being directed to stop may receive additional penalties and may be ejected or suspended.

Arguing, Disrespecting Officials & Continued Misconduct

  • Players and team officials must respect referee and league-organizer decisions.
  • Arguing, persistent complaining, challenging officials, or continued disrespect after being warned or penalized will result in increased punishment.
  • Continued misconduct may result in an additional 2-minute penalty, misconduct, game ejection, or suspension, depending on the severity of the behaviour.
  • A referee does not need to progress through every level of penalty if the conduct is sufficiently serious.
